About

Hello and welcome to my blog!

I’m a food-obsessed vegan blogger and Mum living in London with my husband and our 10-year-old daughter, Honey.

I love nothing better than pottering in the kitchen and coming up with new recipes. I am a baking geek at heart; I get a special kick out of ‘veganising’ recipes which seem impossibly non-vegan in their original form! I’m fascinated by the science of baking and passionate about cakes, bread, pies, cookies, desserts… you name it, I’m probably daydreaming about it. And then of course there’s the family meals cooked on a daily basis; as a vegan (from January 2017, vegetarian since 1996) sometimes I adapt recipes from books, and sometimes I make things up. Occasionally a memory of something eaten somewhere exotic triggers the slightly manic need to recreate it!

The Great British Bake Off

Fun Fact: I once applied for The Great British Bake Off. After several auditions, screen tests and interviews, I made it to the final 50 contestants (out of 20,000+ applicants) for the 2015 series. Although I was quite sad that I didn’t get to meet Paul Hollywood or Mary Berry, I am still rather proud of making it so far. All things considered, it is probably for the best that I didn’t make it ‘into the tent’ – I would likely have been the one rocking in the corner after some kind of cupcake disaster – but it was a fantastic experience and really boosted my confidence in my baking skills.

Baking With Honey – A Bonding Experience

My little girl (her middle name is Honey) has been helping me in the kitchen since she was three years old. Often this meant more cake batter on the floor than in the mixer and cookie dough was nibbled long before making it into the oven! I didn’t mind one bit. I love to see her getting involved, and I enjoy teaching her the basics about nutrition, preparing and cooking all kinds of food. These are valuable skills she will use for life.

Baking with Honey has been, and continues to be, the best bonding experience I could’ve imagined for us; for that very reason this site was originally named Baking With Honey. I renamed it Oat Milk & Cookies in June 2019 to better suit a vegan recipe blog and I wrote a post about this change here: Why I’m Renaming My Blog

Budding Blogger

I started this blog originally as a fun way of sharing my recipes with family and friends who requested them, instead of scribbling them down on a piece of paper! However, as someone who enjoys both writing and photography in addition to baking, blogging has quickly become an enjoyable hobby for me. I hope I’m improving as a blogger as well as a cook as time rolls by! In addition to recipes, I hope to provide detailed, step-by-step instructions and short-cuts that’ll make the kitchen tasks a bit easier and hopefully provide encouragement on vegetarian/vegan lifestyles, particularly raising veggie children. On a purely personal note, I can also look back and see how my little girl grows and changes as she is captured – usually licking spoons! – throughout the site.

Developing recipes and writing about them is very enjoyable but also time consuming; If you try something out, please do let me know how you get along with it by tagging me on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook – and feel free to share links back to this site to help me spread the word!

Happy baking!
